Wednesday 8 June 2011 GILES author in prize controversy
Artist Richard Bell, whose exhibition Richard Bell: Uz vs Them opens in September, has just judged the prestigious Sulman Prize for painting by tossing a coin.
Interviewed in the Art Newspaper, Bell defends his unorthodox method of choosing from the 29 finalists in one of Australia's oldest prizes for contemporary art. Well-known for his views on the art world and awards like this, "they've got very little to do with art", Bell remains adamant that he would use a similar random method if given the chance of judging any future prizes.
