Tuesday 17 March 2009 Fascinating survey of Egyptian art from internationally renowned collection

Egyptian Art Egyptian Art The Walters Art Museum
Volume Editor: Matthias Seidel. With contributions by Regine Schulz, Betsy Bryan and Christianne Henry

D Giles Limited in association with the Walters Art Museum is pleased to announce the publication in June 2009 of a new book to celebrate one of the finest assemblages of ancient art in the United States

The latest in a growing list of titles about some of the most significant and popular subjects in art history and archaeology, this new volume presents 79 beautiful and historically important objects from the Walters Art Museum’s collection of ancient Egyptian art. Ranging in date from the early dynastic to the Roman period, these include small, exquisitely worked jewels to massive carved granite statues of gods and goddesses such as the two monumental 3,000-pound statues of the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet. Stunning new photography of the objects and a wealth of comparative illustrations are supported by an explanatory text which places each artwork within the wider context of ancient Egyptian art and cultural developments.

Reflecting the broader divisions of Egyptian political history, the main presentation of artworks is divided into five chronological sections: the early dynastic period and Old Kingdom; the Middle Kingdom; the New Kingdom; the Third Intermediate Period and Late Period and the Ptolemaic and Roman age. This is a fascinating survey of a major collection of Egyptian art in the context of kingship, religion and daily life
