Tuesday 9 December 2008 St George's Chapel, Windsor
St George’s Chapel Windsor: A Portrait, published by London-based fine-art publisher D Giles Limited in September 2008, is a stunning publication on the Queen’s Free Chapel of St George at Windsor Castle. It captures, in traditional black and white film photography the incredible variety of activities that take place throughout the year, showing both the public and the intimate face of the Chapel
Published on the occasion of the 660th anniversary of the Order of the Garter and of the College of St George, this brand new book offers a rare insider’s view of St George’s, ranging from the calm of daily liturgical life, to the splendour of Garter Day, the Royal Victorian Order and the festivities of Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. The photographs also capture the many individuals of St George’s Chapel, including the Military Knights, the Choir, the bell ringers and archaeologists, the organist and organ tuners, the military, the musicians and consultation delegates in St George’s House. This collection of evocative images presents a unique slice of British history and culture as revealed through the daily life and use of the Chapel.
Over the course of eighteen months between 2005 and 2007, writer and photographer Eleanor Curtis was given unprecedented and privileged access to St George’s Chapel. The result is a body of photographs which reveal both the function and the spirit of the Chapel, as well as the drama of its architecture and the lives and duties of the staff who work there and in other parts of the College of St George. These include photographs of HM The Queen and the Royal Family in attendance at religious services and ceremonial occasions there, including the special service to celebrate the Queen’s 80th birthday.
Eleanor Curtis’s discreet and detailed approach to photography captures the essence and unique spirit of St George’s Chapel.
