Friday 5 November 2010 Stunning tribute to an independent expressionist

The exhibition Glorious Sky: Herbert Katzman’s New York opened at the Museum of the City of New York on November 5th, 2010, and will remain on view through February 6, 2011. Both the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue feature a selection of Katzman’s paintings and drawings, and highlight the artist’s fascination with the dramatic skyline of his adopted home.

Herbert Katzman (1923–2004), produced some of the most lyrical representations of contemporary New York City. Focusing on the familiar bridges, skyline, landmarks and waterways, atmospherically rendered in sunlight, mist or rain, Glorious Sky: Herbert Katzman's New York presents the full range of Katzman’s paintings and works on paper. As well as early drawings, it includes a group of tiny, palm-sized drawings produced at the end of the artist’s life when he was confined to his studio. Never published before, these show in extraordinary detail, and with all the power of his larger drawings, the view from Katzman’s studio overlooking the Hudson River towards the former site of the World Trade Center.
