Drawn by New York Drawn by New York Six Centuries of Watercolors and Drawings at the New-York Historical Society
Roberta J. M. Olson

D Giles Limited is delighted to announce that the Association of Art Museum Curators has named Drawn by New York: Six Centuries of Watercolors and Drawings at the New-York Historical Society, by Roberta J. M. Olson, winner of the award for the Outstanding Catalogue Based on a Permanent Collection 2008, its highest honour. Emily Bellew Neff, curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and chair of the AAMC Permanent Collection Jury notes, “It is a huge challenge to take on such a wide-ranging collection and distill it, and then create a balance between those works celebrated for their iconographical content versus those of sheer artistry. This catalogue succeeds in showcasing the breadth and complexity of the New-York Historical Society’s collection.”

Published in September 2008 by D Giles Limited in association with the New-York Historical Society, Drawn by New York: Six Centuries of Watercolors and Drawings at the New-York Historical Society is the first extensive catalogue of the Society’s unique holdings of original works on paper, and accompanies a travelling exhibition in the USA.

The New-York Historical Society’s drawing collection is one of the earliest assembled in the United States, yet its trove of over 8,000 sheets and 75 rare sketchbooks and albums is surprisingly little known. Spanning six centuries, from sixteenth-century avian watercolours and a Dutch view of New York City (1650), to a complex view of the façade of St. Patrick’s Cathedral captured from inside Rockefeller Center by Richard Haas (2002) and representations of the World Trade Center, both before and after September 11 2001, Drawn by New York presents a rich sampler of over 200 highlights from these vast holdings, many of which are clustered around individual artists.
