Revolution! Revolution! The Atlantic World Reborn
Edited by Thomas Bender, Laurent Dubois and Richard Rabinowitz

To be published in November 2011 by D Giles Limited in association with the New-York Historical Society, Revolution! The Atlantic World Reborn presents the story of the 18th-century Atlantic revolutions as part of a wider, global narrative. It brings together three internationally influential revolutions—in America, France, and Haiti—to explore the enormous transformations in world politics and culture between Britain’s victory in the Seven Years’ War in 1763, and the end of the Napoleonic Wars 52 years later.

Drawing on an international cross-section of experts, and illustrated with an outstanding range of paintings, drawings, prints, historical documents, maps and original manuscripts from the New-York Historical Society, as well as from collections in Britain, France and the United States, the book’s 11 thematic chapters show how the peoples of the Atlantic world registered their grievances in legal argument and violent protest.

Starting with the American revolution—which triggered an explosion of radical ideas and drew many to the anti-slavery crusade—and culminating in the world’s only successful slave revolt, which led to the establishment of Haiti as the first nation fully committed to equality and emancipation, Revolution! The Atlantic World Reborn explores how thousands of revolutionaries on both sides of the Atlantic turned freedom, equality and parliamentary democracy into universal goals that continue to inspire the struggle for justice today.

Publication of Revolution! accompanies an international travelling exhibition, opening at the New-York Historical Society on November 11, 2011.
